Letter to Andy Biggs, President of the Arizona Senate - Senate Bill 1488

Letter

Date: April 11, 2014
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Issues: K-12 Education

Dear President Biggs,

Today I signed Senate Bill 1488, the K-12 Budget Reconciliation Bill for 2014-2015, while also
exercising my line-item veto authority with respect to a specific appropriation.

I have line-item vetoed the following item of appropriation for the reasons outlined below:
ADE- Transfers- Accountability and Achievement T~sting Program

Arizona's families and teachers deserve a state assessment that accurately measures
critical thinking and problem solving abilities rather than rote memorization. The
budget adds funding for Arizona's state assessment program and it would be
inconsistent to redirect those same funds out of the program for an unrelated purpose.
Section 20 B., page 51, lines 19-23

I know we are all committed to preserving Arizona's economic drivers, especially education. I
look forward to our continued collaboration toward this shared goal.
